Kenya’s mangrove ecosystems are deeply intertwined with the lives of coastal communities. Poverty often forces local residents to cut and sell mangrove wood for fuel, furniture, and construction, leading to widespread deforestation. This destruction threatens not only the fragile ecosystems but also the very livelihoods that depend on them.
Our approach breaks this cycle by restoring mangrove forests in close partnership with surrounding communities. We provide residents with alternative sources of income by paying them to raise mangrove seedlings, turning conservation into an economic opportunity. Paired with our knowledge-sharing programs, we empower communities to benefit sustainably from healthy ecosystems. In doing so, we tackle the root causes of deforestation while restoring and protecting Kenya’s coastal ecosystems.
Beyond these core activities, we also organize beach clean-ups, school tree plantings, and amplify local voices at international climate and biodiversity conferences. As a women-led organization, we design our projects to be gender responsive, ensuring that they address the needs of women, who are disproportionately affected by climate change and biodiversity loss.
